Why do I always get offered a biscuit?
Anyone else noticed that once you reach a certain age, activities intended to be ‘age appropriate’ seem to always offer biscuits as an incentive to attend!
Don’t get me wrong, I am indeed partial to the odd custard cream. However,
it’s not likely to be the deciding factor whether I turn up and join in.
This kind of stereotyping is condescending. And on a more serious note, it’s an assumption which indicates ageism.
Ageism, especially gendered ageism may be regarded as less important or offensive than other types of discrimination. But at a time when women live longer and will be part of the workforce for longer, it is serious!
Generalising and making judgements or broad assumptions about a group of people without considering individual differences is discrimination!
Plus on a personal note, as someone who has always felt a bit different and as if I have never really fitted in, I would just like to be accepted as the unique individual I am.
IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE
Please do not take the above to mean I should NEVER be offered treats.
Red wine - chocolate - and if the mood is right, even a biscuit, are all perfectly acceptable.
